The novel by Stendhal "Red and black" — a recognized masterpiece of the nineteenth century. It is known that Pushkin by reading in 1831 in French the first volume of literature was ecstatic and begged the Princess Khitrovo urgently to send him the second. Contemporaries of the author believed that Stendhal disguised as secret flowers two feelings raging in the soul of the ambitious young men: the passion as a spiritual impulse, as instinctive desire and ambition, combined with a thirst for fame, recognition at any cost... this edition also includes selected short stories of the author who is a fine examples of classic French romantic prose.
