Jews in the Russian army

This book is about the meeting of traditional Jewish community and the Russian army, about the socio-political and spiritual circumstances of this meeting and its consequences. The author traces the history of the relationship of the military with the Jews of Russia and Kingdom of Poland from the first Jewish conscription 1827 until the beginning of the First world war. The researcher examines the military and national issues in a broad sociocultural context: literary images of Jewish soldiers in the Russian army, the military Ministers and regimental commanders to ethnic minorities, the life of the pupils in kantonesisch battalions, the Duma debates and battles. The book uses a rich documentary material from Russian and foreign archives.
