Todd Hewitt is the last boy in Prentisstown probably the only settlement of people in a New light. Since after the war with hostile beings spicami settlers were infected with the noise, all the women had disappeared, and all surviving men began to hear the thoughts of each other. Prentisstown turned into a city constantly rumbling thoughts suspicious and aggressive men.
A month prior to its maturity Todd feels that he is hiding something. Something terrible. Exposed to mortal danger, the boy is forced to flee the city with the only true friend — a talking dog munchie.
In the first book of the trilogy Todd will go on a dangerous and exciting journey, during which the boy will learn the truth about a New light and understand who he really is.
