The Charterhouse of Parma

The action of the last novel of one of the most prominent French authors of the nineteenth century Stendhal takes place in Italy, a country of strong passions and great culture. Its theme is the fate of the generation of Italians that came to life in the late eighteenth century, passionately dreaming of independence, but the battle of Waterloo marked the collapse of the enthusiastic illusions. The tension of the events (murders, imprisonment, escape, figuring out the mysteries of birth and death), deep psychological experiences of the characters, for the sake of love going to betray and sacrifice the most expensive, but also an impressive picture of the historical events of the era turn the novel into an undoubted masterpiece of world literature.
